Meat and Dairy

  • 1/2 lb Italian sausage Adds warmth and spices for depth.
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs Helps bind the loaf together. Substitute with oats for a gluten-free option.
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese For that extra zing.
  • 1 cup Mozzarella cheese, shredded The star filling that melts beautifully inside.

Vegetables and Seasoning

  • 2 cloves Fresh garlic Use minced for a smoother mix.
  • 1 small Onion, diced Brings sweetness and aromatic balance.
  • 1/2 Bell pepper, diced For moisture and color.
  • 1 Egg Essential for binding the ingredients.
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning For a touch of classic flavor.
  • 1 cup Marinara sauce Pour over meatloaf for an authentic Italian touch.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, diced onion, diced bell pepper, egg, and Italian seasoning. Mix until everything is just combined—be careful not to overmix.
  • On a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, form the meat mixture into a rectangle about 1-inch thick.
  • Spread the shredded mozzarella cheese down the center of the meat rectangle. Gently fold the sides over the cheese and shape it back into a loaf. Make sure to seal in the cheese!
  • Pour the marinara sauce over the top of the meatloaf, letting some drizzle down the sides.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).
  • Allow the loaf to rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Leftover meatloaf can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It's also great for freezing! To reheat, bake in the oven at 350°F for 20-25 minutes or microwave individual slices. You can also try healthy swaps or a vegetarian version with lentils or chickpeas.
