Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3 cups baked beans Can use canned for convenience or soak dried beans overnight for a homemade dish.
  • 8 slices bacon Crispy bacon is essential for that delightful crunch; turkey bacon is a lighter option.
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped Onions add sweetness; shallots can be a lovely alternative.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar For natural sweetness; honey or maple syrup can provide a unique twist.
  • 1/4 cup ketchup Adds a tangy touch; consider using homemade ketchup for extra depth.
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar For a hint of acidity; white vinegar works too.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Brings umami richness; look for vegan varieties if needed.
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder Ground mustard elevates the flavor; Dijon can be a handy substitute.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Essential for seasoning; consider smoked paprika or chili powder for an added kick.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crispy. Remove and let it drain on paper towels, then crumble into pieces, saving the bacon fat.
  • Add the finely chopped onion to the skillet and sauté in the reserved bacon fat for about 5 minutes until the onion turns translucent.

Mixing

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the baked beans, sautéed onion, brown sugar, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, and crumbled bacon. Stir well until combined.
  • Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.

Baking

  • Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-40 minutes until the top is bubbly and lightly browned.
  • Allow it to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days. To freeze, use a freezer-safe container for up to three months.
