Ingredients

For the Cookies

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (Substitute 1:1 gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free.)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder helps them rise lightly.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda keeps texture soft and airy.
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt balances sweetness.
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (Substitute coconut oil for a dairy-free option, but flavor will change.)
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar (Swap half with coconut sugar for a slightly caramel note.)
  • 1 large egg plus 1 yolk, room temperature adds moisture and structure.
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract the flavor heart of these cookies.
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (Substitute Greek yogurt for a lighter, tangy healthy option.)

For the Frosting

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk or cream to reach spreadable consistency
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch salt
  • Sprinkles, sanding sugar, or edible pearls for decorating (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until creamy and pale, about 2–3 minutes.
  • Add the egg, extra yolk, sour cream, and vanilla, beating until smooth.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet, mixing on low until just combined.
  • Scoop dough into 1.5-inch balls and place on the baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  • Chill the dough on the baking sheet for 30–60 minutes.

Baking

  • Bake for 8–10 minutes, until edges are set but centers still look slightly underbaked.
  • Cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.

Frosting

  • To make the frosting, beat softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar.
  • Add milk a tablespoon at a time until spreadable, then beat in vanilla and salt.
  • Spread frosting onto cooled cookies and top with sprinkles if desired.

Notes

For festive flavors, add 1 teaspoon lemon zest to the dough for bright citrus cookies. For a healthier option, reduce sugar in the dough by 1/4 cup and increase vanilla to compensate.
