Ingredients

For the apple filling

  • 6-8 cups peeled and sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) For balance of tartness and sweetness.
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice To keep apples from browning.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar Add to apples for sweetness.
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon For flavor.

For the crumb topping

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats For chewy texture; can use gluten-free.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Or whole wheat for a heartier taste.
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar Add richness.
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon For topping flavor.
  • 1/4 tsp salt To balance sweetness.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted For texture; can substitute coconut oil.
  • Optional chopped nuts or raisins For added flavor and crunch.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Peel and slice your apples into thin wedges. Place them in a large mixing bowl and sprinkle with a tablespoon of lemon juice to keep them from browning.
  • Add 1/4 cup of brown sugar and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon to the apples. Toss gently to coat them evenly.
  • In another bowl, mix oats, flour, remaining brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour in the melted butter and stir until mixture resembles wet sand.

Cooking

  • Spread the apple mixture in the bottom of the slow cooker. Top evenly with the oat mixture, pressing it down to form a topping.
  • Cover the slow cooker with its lid. Set to low for 3-4 hours for a melt-in-your-mouth texture or high for 1.5-2 hours.
  • Once finished, give the apple filling a gentle stir to mix in the golden gooey goodness that forms at the bottom.

Notes

For healthier swaps, replace half of the sugar with unsweetened applesauce or use maple syrup. Experiment with different toppings such as crushed granola or coconut flakes.
