Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 12 pieces slider rolls (dinner rolls or Hawaiian rolls) Soft, slightly sweet, perfect for holding fillings.
  • 12 slices thin slices deli ham Choose a good-quality smoked ham for depth; substitute turkey for a lighter option.
  • 6-8 slices Swiss cheese, halved Melts beautifully; Gruyere is a great, nuttier substitution.
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted Adds rich browning; olive oil works for a lighter touch.
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard Brightens the flavor; replace with yellow mustard for milder heat.
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds Optional, for classic texture; sesame seeds are a fine swap.
  • 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes Or 1 small shallot, finely minced, for fresher flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Or 1 clove fresh garlic, finely grated.
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper Taste as you go.
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup Optional, for a sweet-savory glaze if you like indulgent dessert-adjacent notes.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking dish with parchment for easy cleanup.
  • Slice the slider rolls horizontally, keeping the tops and bottoms intact like a connected sheet. Lay the bottom halves in the prepared dish.
  • Spread Dijon mustard (and optional honey) lightly over the bottom halves. Layer ham slices evenly, folding if needed.
  • Place the halved Swiss cheese slices over the ham, overlapping slightly.
  • Arrange the top halves of the rolls over the cheese.
  • In a small bowl, whisk melted butter with garlic powder, dried onion, poppy seeds, salt, and pepper.
  • Brush the butter mixture generously over the tops of the rolls.
  • Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 12 minutes, then remove the foil and bake an additional 3-5 minutes.
  • Let the sliders rest for 2 minutes, then slice between rolls and serve warm.

Notes

For added flavor, consider spreading a thin layer of whole-grain mustard or a pickle relish under the cheese. Substitute grilled portobello slices and smoked tofu for a hearty vegetarian option if desired.
