Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef Choose the lean variety for a healthier meal; ground turkey can also work.
  • 1 medium head cabbage Fresh cabbage provides crunch and nutrients; you can use green or savoy cabbage for different tastes.
  • 1 whole onion Adds sweetness and depth; substitute with shallots for a more delicate flavor.
  • 2 cloves garlic Fresh garlic brings a lovely aroma; feel free to use garlic powder in a pinch.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil A light coating to sauté the vegetables; substitute with any neutral oil.
  • Salt and pepper Essential seasonings; add them to taste.
  • Optional spices Consider adding paprika or crushed red pepper for extra warmth.
  • Fresh herbs Thyme or parsley at the end elevates the dish; dried herbs can work too!

Instructions

Preparation

  • Chop the onion and garlic finely, and slice the cabbage into thin strips. Gather your ingredients to streamline the cooking process.
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. You’ll want it hot enough to sizzle when you add the beef.

Cooking

  • Add the ground beef to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart as it cooks. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Once the beef is browned, stir in the chopped onion and garlic. Let them cook for about 2–3 minutes until the onion is translucent.
  • Gently fold in the chopped cabbage, making sure it’s coated with the beef mixture. Cook until the cabbage wilts down, about 5–7 minutes.
  • Taste your dish and adjust the seasoning along the way. This is the time to add any spices you’d like to include.
  • Once everything is well combined and cooked through, turn off the heat. Let it rest for a minute before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

Healthier Swaps: Use lean ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version. Seasonal Twist: Add carrots or bell peppers for a splash of color and flavor.
