Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound Italian sausage Mild or spicy, depending on your preference; feel free to use turkey sausage for a healthier option
  • 12 ounces ziti pasta Penne works as a great substitute
  • 2 cups marinara sauce Homemade or your favorite store-bought variety; try roasting fresh tomatoes for a fresher taste
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese Sub Greek yogurt if you prefer a tangier flavor
  • 2 cups fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced The creaminess makes all the difference; use shredded mozzarella for a quicker melt
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese Adds a nutty flavor; freshly grated enhances the taste
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic elevates the dish; powder can be used in a pinch
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil For sautéing; as always, quality matters
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Or a mixture of oregano, basil, and thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste Adjust according to your preference

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Boil salted water in a large pot and add the ziti pasta. Cook until just al dente, drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add Italian sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
  • Stir in minced garlic and Italian seasoning, cooking for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • In a large bowl, mix the cooked sausage, marinara sauce, and drained ziti until well coated.
  • Add dollops of ricotta cheese to the mixture and fold it in gently.
  • In a baking dish, layer the pasta mixture and sliced mozzarella repeatedly until all ingredients are used, finishing with mozzarella and Parmesan on top.

Baking

  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 5–10 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and golden.
  • Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3–4 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for best results. Also, consider adding fresh basil or parsley before serving for extra freshness.
