  • 2 cups Beef Broth Homemade if you have it; otherwise, store-bought works.
  • 1/4 cup Flour For thickening the gravy. Use whole wheat for a healthier option.
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil Essential for sautéing and rich flavor.
  • 2 tbsp Butter Essential for sautéing and rich flavor.
  • to taste Salt and Pepper Freshly cracked pepper elevates the dish.
  • optional Fresh herbs (thyme or parsley) For garnish, adds a pop of freshness.

Cooking Steps

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add olive oil and butter. Once hot, season the cube steaks with salt and pepper, and sear them for 3-4 minutes on each side until they are browned.
  • Remove the steaks and set them aside. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Cook for 5-7 minutes until they are soft and just starting to brown.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, allowing it to infuse the onions with a lovely aroma.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the onions, stirring to coat. Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking to eliminate any lumps.
  • Gently place your cube steaks back into the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Let everything simmer together for about 10 minutes, or until the steaks are tender and the gravy is thickened.
  • Taste the gravy and season more if needed.

Notes

If you’re lucky enough to have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also freeze the gravy and steaks separately for up to 3 months. To reheat, gently warm on the stovetop or in the microwave until heated through.
