Optional Ingredients

  • 1 cup chocolate chips For dessert version, replace cheese with chocolate.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.
  • Tear croissants into bite-size pieces and spread them evenly in the prepared dish.
  • Scatter the chopped ham (or chosen fillings) and shredded cheese over the croissant pieces.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, thyme, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  • Pour this custardy mixture over the croissants, pressing gently so the pastry absorbs the liquid.
  • Let it rest for 10 minutes to help the croissant pieces soak up the custard.

Baking

  • Bake for 30-35 minutes until the top is puffed and golden.
  • Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For variations, make it vegetarian by swapping ham for caramelized onions; use skim milk for a lighter option; or replace fillings with berries and maple syrup for a dessert version.
