Ingredients
  

For the Meat Sauce

  • 1 pound Ground Beef A mix of meats for richer flavor.
  • 1 pound Ground Sausage Feel free to use ground turkey or plant-based alternatives.
  • 1 large Onion, chopped Fresh onion adds sweetness.
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced Fresh garlic adds depth; pre-minced works too.
  • 28 ounces Crushed Tomatoes Opt for San Marzano for an authentic taste.
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste Enhances flavor and thickens sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano For aromatic boost; fresh can be used too.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Basil For aromatic boost; fresh can be used too.
  • Salt Salt To season sauce.
  • Pepper Pepper To season sauce.

For the Cheese Layer

  • 15 ounces Ricotta Cheese Creamy goodness that defines layering.
  • 1 large Egg Helps bind the ricotta mixture.
  • 3 cups Mozzarella Cheese, shredded Fresh mozzarella is preferable.
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated A sprinkle on top adds a beautiful crust.

For the Lasagna

  • 12 sheets Lasagna Noodles No-boil varieties save time, but traditional pasta works too.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and sausage until browned.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  • Reduce heat and let simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Cheese Mixture

  • In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix well until smooth.

Noodle Preparation

  • Cook traditional lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente.
  • If using no-boil noodles, skip this step.

Assembly

  • In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom.
  • Place a single layer of noodles over the sauce, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, a layer of mozzarella, and a third of the sauce.
  • Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a final layer of noodles topped with remaining sauce and a sprinkle of mozzarella and Parmesan.

Baking

  • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Resting

  • Let the lasagna rest for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Allow to cool before slicing for better shape. Use fresh herbs for added brightness. A splash of red wine or broth can loosen thick sauce.
