  • 1 cup mushrooms, fresh button or cremini Canned mushrooms can be used in a pinch.
  • 1 medium onion, chopped Essential flavor base.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Enhances flavor.
  • 1 cup sour cream Greek yogurt can be used for a lighter version.
  • 2 tablespoons flour For thickening; cornstarch is a gluten-free alternative.
  • 1 cup beef broth Homemade or store-bought.
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce Adds depth of flavor.
  • to taste salt and pepper Basic seasonings.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter For sautéing.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat a tablespoon of oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the thinly sliced beef and sauté until browned, about 3-4 minutes. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add more oil or butter if needed, then add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 2 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sliced mushrooms; cook until mushrooms are soft and browned, about 5 minutes.

Sauce Preparation

  • Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to combine. Slowly add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce while stirring continuously to ensure no lumps form.

Final Steps

  • Let the sauce simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Lower the heat and stir in the sour cream until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Add the sautéed beef back into the skillet, mixing gently until heated through.
  • Serve over wide egg noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use a mix of different mushrooms. Consider adding spinach for added nutrition, or cayenne pepper for a bit of spice.
