Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef Choose lean ground beef or substitute with ground turkey.
  • 4 medium potatoes Use Yukon Gold for a creamy texture or russet for fluffiness.
  • 1 onion, chopped Fresh onions add depth, can use onion powder if needed.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic elevates the flavor; garlic powder can be used.
  • 2 cups shredded cheese Cheddar is classic; can combine with mozzarella or pepper jack.
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup Can use a low-fat version or make your own.
  • 1 cup milk Substitute with almond or soy milk for a dairy-free option.
  • Salt and pepper To taste.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic while cooking.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste. Once the beef is cooked through, drain excess fat and set aside.
  • Thinly slice the potatoes, about 1/4 inch thick for even cooking.
  • In a large bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth to create the creamy sauce.

Assembly and Baking

  • In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer the potatoes, half of the beef mixture, and half of the creamy sauce. Repeat the layers, finishing with cheese on top.
  • Cover with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  • Let it rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Add frozen peas, carrots, or spinach for extra vegetables. Spice it up with cayenne pepper or mix in fresh herbs for added flavor.
