Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 medium medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Peel, core, and chop; a mix of tart and sweet works beautifully.
  • 1/4 cup sugar Feel free to use brown sugar for a deeper flavor or honey for a healthier twist.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Adds warmth; you can substitute with nutmeg or allspice for a unique twist.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger Fresh ginger can add a zesty kick if you prefer.
  • 1/2 cup water or apple juice Use apple cider for an extra hint of autumn.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Brightens the flavors and prevents browning; can be switched for orange juice.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by peeling, coring, and chopping your apples into small, even-sized pieces.

Cooking

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the chopped apples, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and lemon juice. Gently stir to coat the apples.
  • Pour in the water (or apple juice) and bring to a soft boil over medium heat.
  • Reduce heat to low and cover the saucepan. Let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes.
  • Check the compote consistency after about 15 minutes. It should be thick and syrupy.
  • If a smoother texture is desired, mash the apples gently with the back of a spoon.
  • Taste and adjust sweetness or spices if needed.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week or freeze for three months. When ready to enjoy, thaw overnight and warm gently.
