Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3 large Onions Sweet, yellow onions work best for caramelization.
  • 6 slices Bacon Adds a savory, smoky element.
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded Offers creamy richness.
  • 8 oz Cream cheese Gives the dip its creamy consistency.
  • ½ cup Sour cream Enhances the flavors; can substitute with Greek yogurt.
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil Used for sautéing the onions; butter can also be used.
  • Salt and pepper For seasoning to taste.

Instructions

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove from the skillet and let it drain on paper towels.
  • In the same skillet, add olive oil and the sliced onions. Cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 25 minutes.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the caramelized onions, crumbled bacon, sour cream, cream cheese, and half of the shredded Gruyere cheese. Mix well until fully combined.
  • Transfer the mixture into a baking dish and sprinkle the remaining Gruyere on top. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes, or until bubbly and golden.
  • Let cool slightly, then serve warm with crusty bread, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

Consider adding fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary for an aromatic twist, and experiment with different cheese combinations like mozzarella or blue cheese. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container for up to three days, or make it ahead of time and refrigerate until you're ready to bake.
